Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Actor statue for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for The Revenant. He had been nominated in the same category three previous times. When his name was announced, DiCaprio received a standing ovation and a hug from Titanic co-star Kate Winslet.
Idris Elba became the first male actor to win two individual awards in one night, taking home statues for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his role in Beasts of No Nation and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for Luther.
Hollywood’s diversity was on display among the winners. In addition to Elba, Uzo Aduba, Viola Davis and Queen Latifah each took home individual awards. Aduba and Davis also won in 2015. Jeffrey Tambor received the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series award for playing a transgender woman in Transparent. The cast of Orange Is the New Black earned its second straight Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series statue.
